A Longitudinal Look at Family Communication about Sexual Issues

Parent–child communication about sex and relationships can protect adolescents from risky sexual behaviors, but few studies investigate how family talk may change over the course of development adolescence to emerging adulthood. This current study uses thematic analysis explore continuity in perceived with parents relationships, following a United States sample 15 adolescent participants three time points: early (age 13–14), middle 15–16), adulthood 20–21). Analyses addressed participants’ experiences (comfort, engagement) content talk: dating pregnancy parenting, protection, STIs, behavior. Findings show that extends adulthood, changes reflect shifts adult development. Further, while positive engagement comfort remain relatively high time, discomfort negative appear increase, highlighting challenges for ongoing communication. These findings suggest meaningful, role as their children develop, some opportunities face through this process.
